Buzz Aldrin is an American engineer and former astronaut. As the Lunar Module Pilot on Apollo 11, he was one of the first two humans to land on the Moon, and the second person to walk on it. He set foot on the Moon at 03:15:16 on July 21, 1969 (UTC), following mission commander Neil Armstrong. He is a former U.S. Air Force officer with the Command Pilot rating.
Aldrin was born in Glen Ridge, N.J., on Jan. 20, 1930. After high school, he opted to attend the United States Military Academy at West Point, N.Y. He received a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering and joined the U.S. Air Force as a second lieutenant. After a decorated military career, Aldrin was selected to join NASA's team of astronauts in October 1963. Aldrin's first words when he walked on the moon were "beautiful view, magnificent desolation."
